This spring the Tri Angle label released a debut EP from London duo AlunaGeorge on the strength of their excellent track "You Know You Like It", which found subtly-warped production from George Reid marked by Aluna Francis' sly, sweet-sung lines. The song conjured a clubby 1990s R&B slink while also packing a fair punch, with a simple electro-pop hook that stuck. But the new AlunaGeorge single, "Your Drums, Your Love", is the work of a pair inhabiting a widescreen space while keeping peculiar production touches in tact. Everything they do here seems to prioritize maximizing emotion. Beats snap harder, toying with negative space to create depth; production is thoroghly textured but less dense. And occasionally a hyper-warped male vocal offers a welcomed foil for Francis' voice to stretch and soar: "I've been treading water for your love," she sings, "Whether I sink or swim/ It's you I'm thinking of." There's a tinge of unexpected desperation to it, executed in a sophisticated fashion that only comes with experience.
