Rock & Roll
I guess the rest of the EP is a slight disappointment given what Turner\\\'s capable of, but damn, you cannot f**k with \\\"I Still Believe\\\". Being a Frank Turner fan is just about more fun than being a fan of just about any other band or solo artist out there for me, perhaps because he uses his best songs to sing out music, musicianship, fandom, and its trappings (\\\"Once We Were Anarchists\\\", \\\"I Knew Prufrock Before He Got Famous\\\", \\\"Love, Ire & Song\\\"), and he sings about it in such an utterly passionate, convicted way. I find it hard to believe that anybody who\\\'s ever even thought about writing a song can\\\'t relate to those songs on some level. \\\"I Still Believe\\\" continues that tradition, and once a slightly awkward line about punks and skinheads is out of the way, it comes armed with some of Turner’s best one-line swipes of all time. \\\'Anyone could take this stage, and make miracles for minimum wage\\\'; \\\'I still believe in the sound that has the power to raise a temple and tear it down\\\'; \\\'I still believe in the need for guitars and drums and desperate poetry\\\'. And to top it all, that chorus - \\\'who would have thought that after all, something as simple as rock’n’roll would save us all?\\\' For anybody else, it’s a rousing call to arms, but for somebody who’s sung with such desperation about his teenage dreams and the way they failed, it’s utter redemption. Not just a crucial part of the Turner legacy, but a properly fantastic song to boot.
