Babylon 5: Objects at Rest (Television Soundtrack)
by Steven McDonald The score for the penultimate episode of Babylon 5 is a fittingly melancholic piece interrupted once in a while by moments of active drama and intense foreboding. For the most part, then, both the live orchestra and the electronic instruments are kept low, with only sparse traces of melody and theme, with the consequence that the end title music arrives with all the subtlety of a charging rhino. While the episodic scores are an intriguing idea (one given extra interest via collector's-edition picture CDs), providing all of the cues for an episode very easily points out the inherent weakness of some underscore music - as occurs here, when lengthy stretches are little more than tonal underpinning.
