Sometimes we find musical common ground as much from what a band is as what a band is not. Rockford is not young. They are old and beat down by life. Rockford is not good looking or nice on the nose. They are ragged and smell funny. Rockford are not star material. They tell stupid jokes and don’t dance. The one thing Rockford can do is rock. These five ungainly friends have played music in bands together since they were teenagers. Now as they each move past the half century mark the only thing that’s improved is the way they make their music. It’s always burned down the house and been about simple structures overlaid in fun and interesting ways a’la Brian Eno and The Velvet Underground. The difference is thirty plus years playing in bands together (past bands: Eggplant, 00 Soul, The Lazy Cowgirls, The Final Tourguides). A huge swath of the world's musical landscape concerns itself with fame and money. It’s been like that since the dawn of recorded music. Rockford’s music isn't concerned with that. They're the real deal. They fly below the radar. Rockford plays a few shows a year, often in Long Beach California with other bands from that creative and diverse music scene. They record in the back of an old pawn shop owned by one of their guitarists. While some of their past projects over the decades have flirted with success Rockford remains one of the best bands in the world nobody’s ever heard of. With a nod to past guitar bands like Crazy Horse and Television, Rockford toils in obscurity while making some of the best music coming out of America today.
