by Scott YanowThese dialogues between Vinny Golia (switching between many reed instruments, some of which are quite exotic) and bassist Bertram Turetzky (superb with his bow) are generally sparse, make expert use of space, and develop slowly. Many of the performances are more mellow than expected, with Golia showing off the sound of his various instruments while Turetzky offers commentary. However, Golia's occasional explosions can be rather abrasive and shocking, breaking up the introspective mood. Truth is, few of these pieces develop much beyond setting a mood and after a while, the music is a bit tedious, easier to admire than to love.
