Jim Williams, a native Pennsylvanian, started making music in the early 1990's while working full-time with a major U.S. airline. He appeared at several coffee houses and underground venues, singing his songs and honing his craft. After the independent success of his first project, Notions, Williams set out for Nashville, TN, seeking fame and fortune. Williams appeared at local songwriter venues, including Third Coast Cafe, Boardwalk Cafe, The Broken Spoke Cafe, Davis-Kidd Booksellers, and the world-renowned Bluebird Cafe. After a performance at the Bluebird Cafe, Williams was recognized by TNN Music City News. After photographs and a personal interview, Williams' mugshot ended up in a frame on the wall at the Bluebird Cafe among a prestigious collection of up-and-coming songwriters. Later, the collection of faces ended up in a book titled Looking for Number 1: Portraits and Passions of Nashville Songwriters. While in Nashville, Williams also set up his own publishing company, Silly Notion Publishing. In 1995, Williams moved back to Pennsylvania, accepting a promotion with the airline to help care for his terminally ill mother. The move took Williams back to his roots, which strengthened his writing. After the death of his mother in 1996, he released a second CD titled Summer's Last Rose and dedicated it to her memory. He also toured many coffee houses in his home state, neighboring states and as far west as Alaska. In 1996, Williams also pitched a couple of song ideas to a local band, Sower, and ended up getting 3 cuts on their CD, The Path. The CD received state-wide attention in the Christian college circuit. That same year, Williams established a local chapter of Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) in Pittsburgh. He coordinated monthly workshops for local songwriters. Jim is also an active member of Pittsburgh Songwriters Association (PSA). In 1998, Williams scored another 4 cuts on indy artist Judy Wright's CD, Kiss Me Alot. This CD broke new ground for Williams' music, reaching across the Atlantic to places such as England, France, Germany, and The Netherlands. Williams' songs Peace of Mind, Brandywine, Old Soul, and Missing You were reviewed favorably by Country Music Magazine International's Alan Cackett and ABC Radio's Dan Gordon. In 1999, Williams revisited local band Sower and gained 2 more cuts on the band's Something Gold Something True release. Williams' co-penned the songs Opportunity and Jet Black with the band's leader, Randy Staudt. Williams released another CD, One Star, in 2000, produced by Dave Hanner of Corbin/Hanner.
