The craze for remixing tracks by classic soul, jazz, and R&B artists meets Nina Simone on RCA's 2006 reissue project REMIXED AND REIMAGINED. A host of DJs, including Coldcut, Tony Humphries, Francois K., Nickodemus, and DJ Logic, treat Simone gems from the late 1960s and early '70s; editing, collaging, and creating rhythmic and textural atmospheres, they outfit the tunes for the dancefloor or the lounge. There are webs of electronic effects and beats that range from funk to trance to downtempo to house, but at the center of it all is Simone's astonishing musical personality, which REMIXED AND REIMAGINED manages, thankfully, to keep intact. Eminently listenable, the set is a fine introduction to Simone for a younger generation raised on electronic music, and a creative, fun surprise for fans of the original recordings.
