Cat Anderson was famous during his lifetime as Duke Ellington's high-note trumpeter. His abilities in his upper register were only equaled by Maynard Ferguson, Jon Faddis, Arturo Sandoval and a very few others. He was a very credible trumpeter in his middle and lower registers too, and was a more well-rounded player than one might expect, as he shows throughout this reissue. Recorded March 20, 1964, Cat Anderson's Paris Session featured the 47 year old trumpeter on two of his originals, four standards and a song by Claude Bolling (who appears on three of the tracks). He is joined by Buster Cooper (tb), Paul Gonsalves (ts), Russel Procope (cl, as), Roland Lobligeois (b), Joe Turner (p), and Sam Woodyard (dms). Cat is heard in prime form throughout this highly enjoyable and formerly rare set, which show that he was much more that just the #1 high note trumpeter.
