Live in Europe
by Scott Yanow Adderley led what was arguably his finest group during 1962-63, a sextet with brother Nat on cornet, Yusef Lateef on flute, oboe and tenor, pianist Joe Zawinul, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes. This excellent LP (whose contents were never previously available in the U.S.) is highlighted by Jimmy Heath's "Gemini," "Work Song," a lengthy "Trouble in Mind" and the exciting "Dizzy's Business." Lateef fit into this band perfectly, giving the unit a fresh and distinctive voice. All of his recordings with Adderley are easily recommended. Recorded in concert at the International Jazz Festival, Comblain-La-Tour, Belgium, on August 5, 1962. Digital rerecording at Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, CA, 1986 Digital mastering at Fantasy Studios, 1988 "Cannonball in Europe!" originally issued in Europe on Riverside 499 (mono) and 9499 (stereo).
