Al Hughes plays 6&12 string guitar and harmonica,but it’s his voice which is often singled out as the keystone of his sound. Described by one critic as sounding as if it had been aged in oak casks, it has a haunting smoky quality which is capable of conveying a huge variety of moods, from gentle and wistful, to raucous and raging. Al plays clubs concerts and festivals all over the UK and Europe, and has appeared alongside numerous artists including Eric Burdon, Michael Mara, The Average White Band, Martin Stephenson, The Blues Band, and Maggie Bell. Al’s music has been played on both local and National Radio, and his album Sad Songs and Tall Stories made Blues in Britain magazine’s pick of the year. The Lights Out By Nine albums Good Morning Mr Universe and Make your Own Luck, for which he wrote many of the songs, both made top 4 on BB King’s ‘Bluesville’ radio chart in Washington DC.
