Chicago singer/songwriter and instrumentalist Carol Williams' style of "story-telling" in her composition is what has earned her a lasting presence on folk radio with her classic "Empty Boots", written about the 2007 display in Chicago's Grant Park of over 3000 pairs of combat boots representing each casualty (at that time) in Iraq and Afganistan. She has been described as "a countrified Laura Nyro", and a "feminine Mose Allison", but is generally known for her clear focus on social commentary, her theme-based CD projects (the "Commentaries Series"), and her passion for irony, such as her song "I R Smith" exemplifies. Beginning in 2008 with "Empty Boots: Commentaries on War and Country", then "We Can Work it Out: Commentaries on the Beatles" in 2009, followed by "Hey Joan: Commentaries on Her" in 2010, her most recent release is "Private Artist: Commentaries on Life". Carol Williams is a US Army Veteran and a professional musician/instrumentalist, but mostly sees music as a way to present "commentaries" on social issues ranging from war, women's issues, and the challenges of life.
