Soldier
“The inspiration for this song came from several encounters with active military personnel, as well as their family members," says native West Virginian Lionel Cartwright. "I wanted to write a song that honors these men and women from a non-partisan point of view---from a soldier's point of view; while on duty in the field.” Lionel was awarded "Disc of the Day" by music critic Robert K. Oermann for this single in Music Row Magazine: "It has been 16 long years since Lionel Cartwright had a song on the charts. For somebody who used to be a chart-topping artist, his slip into comparative obscurity is one of the great Nashville mysteries. I, for one, have never forgotten what a talented fellow he is. And now he has a comeback single that demonstrates it all over again. For daring to be different, as well as offering a powerful song for our times, give this man a Disc of the Day. He returns with this dramatic ballad about a soldier’s thoughts in the field. An emotional bulls eye, all the more so because of the stark, chilling production. A very, very welcome return." -Critic Robert K. Oermann; MUSIC ROW MAGAZINE; January 18, 2008
