The energetic source for the music was a journey made by Emily to the Mato Grosso Forest and the Amazon Forest of Brazil. Staying in a vast raw natural environment, bathing in waterfalls at dawn, such experiences fed her senses in such a way that on returning to England she was inspired to convert these memories to sound and commenced writing lyrics which reflect experiences of this time. Staying in such nature devoid of your customary comforts and securities, your perspective shifts an experience that North American Indians call a vision quest. Emily combines her mellow 'cello and singing with classical harmonies and percussion, tribal chant and ethnic instruments. In 1992 Emily was invited to perform this music at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was at one of her performances that Emily was first introduced to tribal people from Brazil. In particular the Xavante Tribe who are indigenous to the Mato Grosso. Fascinated by her music, they invited Emily to visit their village. Which she did - two years later. The Earth Summit also hosted the Tribal Gathering. This event attracted tribal people from all over the world and gave them a platform to share and demonstrate their traditional culture as well as voice their opinions over various environmental issues. Subsequent to her performances Emily was invited to stay at this event and record the traditional songs and rituals. "Vozes da Terra" - Voices of the Earth is compiled from edits of recordings made during this time. "Yanomami" features recordings made of Yanomami Shamans practising the sacred Charborie ritual. The song commences with a speech in indigenous language made by Davi Yanomami a spiritual leader of this tribe.
