Three's the Charm

Info I've been making music for years as a music for hire, writer-arranger-producer, and in the process, been fortunate to have had a couple of songs recorded by known artists, and for them to have done okay on the charts. Most of this WAP activity, I've viewed as work, as a way to make a living. It can be interesting, challenging, and sometimes enjoyable, but usually it's about helping someone else realize their musical or creative vision. The stuff I do for myself, for fun, is different. I don't know if it's "commercial", but it makes me happy to write and produce songs that I enjoy listening to. And I hope some other people might too. My heroes are, for different reasons, and among others; Steely Dan, Todd Rundgren, Billy Joel, Randy Newman, James Taylor, Mac MacAnally, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Burt Bachrach, The Beatles, all from my era. And there are some new kids on the block that I also love; Allen Stone, Jason Mraz, Foster The People, Grace Potter, Mayer Hawthorne, John Mayer, Adele, and others. For me, these guys are where the bar is musically and lyrically. I'm trying to get over that bar with every song I write and produce. Not sure I've even come close yet, but trying is so much fun. Hope you'll enjoy "Three's The Charm". Lyrics for "Three's The Charm" "Who Ruined The Radio" Marvin Gaye was in my dream last night At the foot of my bed dressed in white Rubbin' his eyes like he'd been cryin' When he spoke I could feel the weight on his mind He said man talk to me, you got to tell me how long The AM and the FM have been one big yawn I came back here hopin' you might know Brother Brother Tell me What happened to my funky grooves Where did all the soul men go The Memphis horns and the Philly strings Who ruined the radio What about my Motown Sound I looked high and low, but it can't be found Who decided to cancel that show What happened son, who ruined the radio Can you tell me when the lights went out When the Brothers stopped singin' Twist and Shout That's the kind of song that I really miss Makes you feel so good you just can't resist I talked to Sam, Jackie, Otis and Ray They told me to tell you they feel the same way So take your time, tell me blow by blow What happened son, who ruined the radio What happened to my funky grooves Where did all the soul men go The Memphis horns and the Philly strings Who ruined the radio What about my Motown Sound I looked high and low, but it can't be found Who decided to cancel that show What happened son, who ruined the radio A loud noise woke me up I pulled the cover up over my head It was the sound of a DJ's voice And he was readin' the mornin' news I heard him say "the number one song is comin' next" I reached over to the bedside table And I hit snooze (I want to know) Repeat Chorus "You Take It Too Hard" Switch your cell to airplane mode and shut your email down Chances are you'll hear from her tomorrow Have another round on me Hear me saying she's not really gone At least not for long, no You take it too hard You take it too hard She'll come back to ya if you play your cards You take it too hard You take it too hard my brother You take it too hard You take it too hard She'll come back to ya if you play your cards I've watched her watching you before when you were unaware It's hard to miss the appetite in her eyes When your heart's just one big bruise Heads she always wins and tails you lose If you choose You take it too hard You take it too hard She'll come back to ya if you play your cards You take it too hard You take it too hard, and everyone can see You take it too hard You take it too hard She'll come back to ya if you play your cards Old friend It' doesn't have to end But do as I say not as I've done The one I loved knowing far too well She was the one The only one Guitar Solo Chorus to fade "After Ivan" Ivan made the big wind blow Ivan brought the rain He came through in September Leaving suffering and pain He blew up the Caribbean Flooded the Yucatan Spun into the Gulf of Mexico Like a street fightin' man After Ivan, only one thing left to loose After Ivan He drifted north toward Mobile Gettin' stronger everyday It's like he was on a mission And we were standin' in his way I thought about my baby girl I thought about my wife I stacked sand bags past midnight I thought about my life After Ivan, only one thing left to loose After Ivan He came across the sound as the tide was risin' Waves as big as mountains and the air was filled with glass The I-10 bridge went down, concrete crashin' Ninety souls are finally home at last, after Ivan We found a sting ray in the bedroom There was a sailboat on the lawn My neighbor's house was in the bay The Cherokee was gone The sun was shinin' in the sky It was 85 and clear And Ivan was kickin' Atlanta's ass Three hundred miles from here After Ivan, After Ivan Repeat Chorus, guitar solo Thanks to all the talented musicians and singers involved; Tony Towerz, additional vocals on "Who Ruined The Radio" Cheryl Rogers, Tanya Smith, Candi Pearson Shelton, and Alfreda Gerald BGVs Sonny Lallerstedt and Pat Buchanan guitars Tom Grose and Cheryl Rogers additional Keys Joe Reda, Bass on "After Ivan"
