Love's Song
Hi this is Craig Smith... and for the last "many" years most people have been aware that I play the guitar and record instrumental guitar music, without the slightest trace of a vocal. Although I began my guitar playing on ukulele at around age two and guitar from about five I have continued to be essentially a guitarist concentrating on instrumental music... I also have been known to sing. In fact back many years ago I was usually at the forefront of some band or another, or as a solo act... singing and playing... cover songs as well as original songs of my own. Many of my own vocal pieces have been recorded by other artists... and most are long gone having dropped into obscurity. My recording "Love's Song", an original piece... written in 1981 is a ballad in a "retro style", however not "retro" at the time I created it. Then it was just a song, the nature of which was fitting for the time... never was recorded by anyone else and forgotten until I recently came across a considerable amount of old recordings... some incomplete some finished on "cassette tapes", and "Love's Song" was one finished project. I transferred the recording to CD a few months back, and after playing for a few people was encouraged to release it. Of course it needed a little tweaking, and re-mastering to clean up and improve the quality of its cassette tape origin... but here it is. For what it is worth, this is still the original track, a one shot, single take... just guitar and voice recording. There has been nothing added, no extra tracks on the original or on the remix... so this is how I was basically performing back in the eighties and prior as a solo lounge player, some memories of which I'd rather not remember. The whistling... as an instrumental break, was also done on the spot... in the original one take solo recording. So, for whatever it's worth... it's just a song... Craig Smith Additional information on myself: I am a guitarist and composer. I have played guitar nearly all of my life as a full time profession, not as a hobby... or only as a sideline. I first began playing a ukulele around two years of age and started guitar at about five when my grandfather died and I acquired his guitar. My mother was also playing guitar while she was carrying me for the nine months before my birth, and many people have expressed since that when I entered this life I was most likely subconsciously aware of the guitar's sound... and probably on a hunt to discover what was that sound I had heard prior to birth. Today I play all types of guitars acoustic/electric, electric and nylon string classical... for whatever type of music seems to be appropriate at the time. I do however play only in the classical finger style, that is never using a pick. I did begin my guitar playing with a pick, but after almost twenty years decided to try using my fingers and shortly after never went back to a pick again. All of the music I play is based on an impressionistic... improvisational style. Creativity is very important to me and is the essence of composition in music, and although I am thoroughly trained and can read full classical guitar notation, I enjoy reinventing the music and never playing the same piece the same way twice and not following a chart. This spontaneous, improvisational style lets me explore new areas of sound as I would discover new ideas in any area of life. I usually perform live as a soloist because I can rely on myself showing up, however there is nothing finer than playing with and exchanging musical ideas with others in a performance. Craig
