Twang On
We're high on Jeff Dayton around here. In fact, you could say we're "Stoned." (check out the intoxicating track 2 for why). In a refreshing departure from the cliché-ridden fare of current country radio, Nashville writer artist Dayton delivers hook-filled music matched with well-crafted lyrics that are as upbeat as they are insightful. You can tell he's been influenced by artists like Blake Shelton (the very sexy "It's On Tonight"), Jerry Reed ("Twang On") and Jason Aldean ("Absofreakinlutely, a rocker that would be as likely to be covered by Montgomery/Gentry as Chickenfoot). Also, this CD earns points for being the first we've ever heard to successfully use the word 'nomenclature' in a country song (see "Wired That Way," a future George Strait hit if there ever was one. He's dedicated the album to his former road boss, Hall of Fame artist Glen Campbell, with covers of "Gentle On My Mind" and Jimmy Webb's gem "The Highwayman." Dayton played guitar for Campbell for 15 years and clearly learned a lot from the Rhinestone Cowboy. In fact, Dayton went on to tour with Kenny Chesney and a few of these songs would easily be hits for KC. Just when you think you've got this CD's direction figured out, Dayton takes a left with his vocal-rich version of the Hawaiian-style "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" and then a hard right into George Benson smooth jazz territory on "Bad 4U," complete with flugelhorns and cool guitar. Dayton's voice has a uniqueness to it that will make it stand apart from the sea of similar sounding artists at radio. He's a rich baritone with range and both a sincerity and a smirk... we're not sure which one we like more but they both work. This is Jeff Dayton's seventh studio CD and it's surprising he hasn't been discovered yet. Maybe Twang On will change all that for him. Recommended.
