One rainy day last winter, Dave's colleague and fellow songwriter Nick Crowe presented him a demo of the ultimate ode to infatuation in inclement weather - "Sunbathing in the Rain." Nick asked Dave to have the Yaks record the tune, and they did in vintage Stax/Atlantic style. Bassist Dave churned out "Sunbathing" with longtime drummer Steve Glover and Dave's brother Joel on rhythm guitar. Piano, guitar, and vocal overdubs were added. The collaboration worked so well that a month later Nick brought the Yaks another original "Music but No Place to Dance." The Yaks shifted to a more acoustic feel for this waltz. Within a few weeks the Yaks had the original "Read My Mind" and yet another Nick & Katie Crowe song "Twice on Sunday." By this time the Yaks basically said we might as well make an album. So regularly during the summer of '09, The Yaks recorded their jam sessions. Outtakes from these sessions became the additional dozen songs that complement those mentioned above. They even gave rhythm section accompaniment to complete two songs begun by Jason Grant - "Hold On" and "I Remember You." This disc is at once the Yak's rawest, best engineered, and logically sequenced. The 15 songs snake gradually through various styles - rock segues into pop and then folk before hitting the blues, jazz, swing, reggae (?!!), before rocking the closer. They did it all without leaving the garage. The rest is up to you.
