Joel Powell also known by his stage name Joel NR Powell aka “Ninja” (Born in Toronto, Ontario) is a DJ, Recording Artist, Author and Entrepreneur who serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of NR Entertainment Incorporated which is a entertainment corporation, dealing principally in media & arts (with a broad focus on disc jockey service, record label, magazine, film, poetry, and food). With key profit sources also growing from music, publishing, direct product sales and extensive marketing. Initially from Shoreham, a housing community in the Jane & Finch neighborhood of Toronto in Canada. Joel Powell was raised by immigrant parents Mother (Trinidadian) & Father (Jamaican) & older sister. He found his passion through the roots of his family in the form of music. His father owned a huge record collection and at a young age he became very fascinated by it. It’s been stated numerous times by Powell that without it he wouldn’t be in the position he’s in today. Powell’s fascination & love for music grew quickly as he used music as his outlet for staying out of trouble and maintaining a strong & positive life. It was in his late teens where Powell decided to take the records that were given to him by his father & utilize them through his West Indian background he created the sound system (Jamaican Term for Disc Jockey Service) Ninja Ryders Sound. Ninja Ryders Sound played endlessly through clubs, house parties, weddings, festivals throughout the Toronto circuit always in steady demand in 2002 via a connection in the Los Angeles market Ninja Ryders Sound was given the opportunity to launch their own online radio show via sensimedia.net called “The Layer” the show quickly took off generating over 20,000 plus listeners by hosting numerous live events and showcasing tons of great music. While Powell saw this as a high level of growth he quickly took advantage of the demand and decided that it was time he turned his passion into a corporate brand creating what is now known as NR Entertainment Inc (Ninja Ryders Entertainment). After recruiting 6 associates the NR brand was on its way very soon after Powell added 5 more ventures to his business: NR Entertainment Records, NR TV, NR Films, Do You Like Poetry?, & Golda’s Island Express catering. These all saw great promise and significant growth making Powell indeed succeed at his goals of being an Entrepreneur. In 2005 Powell graduated from Humber the business school a feat many would call a stepping stone towards higher heights but it was at this time it became a huge transition period where many of his previous associates began to look towards other avenues of business. Quickly Powell was left with only one associate plus himself instead of using it as a moment of failure he promptly saw it as a moment of growth where he returned back to his roots as a DJ and in 2006 began releasing numerous mix tapes featuring exclusive songs by Reggae & Hip Hop artists throughout the world to date under his Ninja Ryders Sound brand he has released nearly 200 plus mix tapes. 2006 Powell restructured his NR Entertainment Records label and teamed with independent producer Rome Hefty’s Family Affair Productions and began releasing his own original music NR 4 Life Volume 1 EP & NR City EP both EP’s propelled him to becoming myspace.com 2008 # unsigned artist for 2 months generating over 1 million plus downloads for original music. He was then featured in 2009 as a hood star inside The Source Magazine’s August 2009 Issue. He didn’t stop there by far in 2010 he released the now award winning title “Black Empowerment & Minority Issues” a book to which shares many of his personal business experiences plus gives strong insight on life as a visible minority in regards to the struggles they face daily in both their professional & personal lives. The book was voted best selling non fiction title for 2011 inside a highly acclaimed book store in Canada called Knowledge Book Store. Powell has been featured inside numerous magazines both locally & internationally Snap Brampton Newspaper featured a story entitled “Local Author gives hope”, Caribbean Camera featured a story entitled “Fighting back from the Ghetto”, Toronto Life Magazine featured a story entitled “Fight or Flight” which was written by acclaimed Journalist & Author Jan Wong. Powell presently graces the front cover of Humber the Business School be Magazine which showcases top graduates and their success stories cover story discusses his rise to be a college graduate and offers advice to students the importance of getting an education & staying in school. After a very successful 2012 opening up for the #1 Independent Rapper in the world Tech N9ne and D Block Records own Jadakiss. Powell is putting the finishing touches on his official debut which is a 3 part package entitled the "Empowerment Series" which consist of a book, film, & soundtrack the soundtrack features the highly politically driven “They Look At Me” Featuring the son of Hip Hop Icon Eric “Eazy-E” Wright Lil Eazy-E. 2013 by far will be an epic moment that will place Powell miles ahead in the world of entertainment.
