Scroll of History
"Scroll of History" is an original song composed and performed by Mara Katria with lyrics adapted almost directly from the beautiful poetry of her father. The piece was created as a present for him in the Irish-Celtic style for which they have long shared a love. The poem by SEP depicts what he refers to as "A True Event of Natural History"... "Scroll of History" - Lyrics The Heron and the Egret Are a wash some birders say, Except that one is small and white, The other tall and gray. They seem to live in parallel But live as is their style: They fly, they fish, they molt, they mate And stay a little while For thirty years a Heron blue Resided on the lake, And fished along the shallows For the minnows he would take; He wasn't much for company And scorned my every mood; He was a bird without romance; He had that attitude! I never saw him with a mate, I never saw him sleep; I never knew the pattern of The hours he would keep. I guess that we were never friends, Just neighbors of the vale, Who co-existed in the sense Of writing our own tale. I did disturb his peace at times By simply being there; And he would often glare at me When I was unaware. But one day purest Egrets seemed To fall out of the sky And seized the Heron's lake for theirs And passed the evening by. Much lovelier than him, I thought, More graceful and quite sleek; They made their home in summer's calm And kept it all that week. The Heron sometimes flew by them; The Egrets stood their ground; They could not find the other's eye; They did not make a sound. They did not know quite what to do; They didn't have the words; And for that week, they split the lake In somewhat jealous thirds. Then, in mid-dusk the seventh day, The Heron flew away Into the Scroll of History, The ink of its new day. The Heron and the Egret are a wash some birders say, Except that one is small and white, The other tall and gray. The haughty Egrets didn't care, They fled soon afterward, Indifferent to the Heron's plight, The shaming of a bird. Ms. Mara Katria is a musician and film director for EiA Studios who often delves into times that came before her own and those of legend -- about which she is pleased to mention that "there is much there, in the mists of time: beautiful, haunting, frightening, inspiring, healing. There are things that should not be lost, and somehow I got the privilege of being a story teller in these days." Mara's musical compositions are frequently influenced by Celtic, Middle Eastern, and New Age genres -- with emphasis on vocals and lush keys (as with: Enya and Enigma). She derives great inspiration from creators like Annie Lennox, Peter Gabriel, Sarah McLachlan, U2, and Loreena McKennitt. You can find out more about the films she is involved with (which feature such amazing musical artists as David Stanley, Burning Bridget Cleary, and Vance Gilbert) at www.ptwmthefilm.com/press or www.marakatria.com.
