Little Hands
Which came first -- the lyric or the melody? With debut song, Little Hands, it was the melody that sprang to life for Canadian composer Veronica Gerber on a cold winter night in Calgary, Alberta. The opening phrases of the tune initially inserted themselves into her mind as she was driving to an evening swim class after work! While unbidden, those first phrases of the melody so captured her attention, that over the next few days she further developed the song and added lyrics. Veronica took the phrase, "Many hands make light work" and changed it to "Little hands make light work" to capture a parent's delight in having their little one nearby to make the work of chores less dreary – lightening the load by instilling purpose and removing drudgery. At the time, Veronica was writing quite a bit of poetic prose but none had yet been set to music. Her first demo was recorded in a home basement - a rough rendition, to be sure. Years later back home in her native Toronto, she dusted off the song and started making inquiries about how to get the song properly recorded. Long-time friend and Canadian soprano, Alessandra Paonessa, kindly consented to sing! But someone needed to take hold of the project and bring it to life. Veronica soon discovered that what she needed was to have the song "produced." And what a grand adventure that was! She searched online and queried some of her more musical friends. Long story short, she hired Mike Oz who owns StudioZ Productions in Toronto. A seasoned musician, Mike was genuinely touched when he heard Little Hands for the first time, especially as sung by the inimitable Alessandra Paonessa! Veronica recalls, "One thing led to another and before we knew it we were all carried away with our Little Hands project. There are so many stories to tell. For one, I feel like I've "woken up" again, personally, with this new connection to music. And Mike’s enthusiasm and vision for Little Hands also helped renew Alessandra’s energy to pursue her first single and debut album. Under Mike's direction we decided to go for broke and hire a pianist and cellist. Doug Abbott is our talented pianist and arranger for Little Hands, and Samuel Bisson's cello provides the soulful resonance that is sure to tug at your heartstrings. We also thank Julian Meli for capturing the joy you see in our cover art photography! Little Hands has enjoyed enthusiastic reviews thus far among family and friends, and we’re thrilled it’s now available worldwide! I've gone on to compose songs in other genres (follow at SoundCloud) and Alessandra’s own debut album launches this fall. We hope you enjoy the work of our little hands."
