This music was a major part of John Barton's all-day cycle of Greek plays at the Aldwych Theatre, London, and it proved so popular with audiences that the band and I decided to finance an album ourselves. One evening after the show we all lugged our instruments round to a basement studio in Covent Garden, and spent all night recording. We released the album on cassette for sale in the theatre foyer. It sold 2,500 copies during the 12-week run, and 30 years later I'm still getting requests for it via the Web - hence this new release. I want to acknowledge the fun, energy and creativity of all the musicians involved: the late George Weigand, Christopher Lacey, Peter Cameron, Colin Rae, Tony McVey, Sam Carter, and the singer Susannah Fellowes. The album was mixed at Townhouse Studios, London, by my much-missed friend, the late Colin Sanders - inventor of the Solid State Logic mixing desk.
