The Door to Hoa Binh
I as a door gunner/crew chief in Vietnam 1969-71. I wrote a lot of poetry over there and when I came back home. Writing it all down started me on the path to healing. I returned to college in 1973 and realized I wasn't the same Tom Smith that I was when over there. Picked up some Neil Young song books and taught myself guitar (still learnin'!) After a dreary, tumultuous time trying to numb myself I finally got help at Leeds VA hospital in North Hampton MA in 1994. I had lost a lot of friends, both there and when I came back to this malady. Leeds taught me how to deal with it. I kept writing songs, mostly angry ones. I wasn't grounded yet; that came much later. I moved to Asheville NC in early 2007 and started playing open mics around town and kept writing and practicing. It helped me get the word out to the new crop of PTSDers from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. I was always well received at open mics here in town. I hope this album helps people recover from War and trauma and find Peace with themselves. Enjoy, Hoa Binh Blessings to you.
