State of Grace

State of Grace

My musical career began in Dunedin with some very rough recordings in a friends Recording Studio (Graffitti Studio). It progressed to song-writing after a series of events in my life and September 11th occurred in the States. I lost my grandmother who was very dear to me and whom I shared a special bond with. As time went on I met more and more musicians and fellow song-writers. "Warm, sensory, mysterious and poetical", comments made about my songs from a fellow musician. Others have said they appreciate and respect the openness and candidness that I demonstrate when performing my music and that they can identify with particular songs as it relates to their own life in some way. My song-writing journey began in Dunedin in 2000 and continued while visiting Stewart Island and the West Coast, inspiration came from the journey between these three places and songs were written sometimes while driving, (it made the trip longer but also like a journey of a different kind, the creative kind of journey which often can be life-changing and inspiring). I began performing these songs which sprung up like unknown kinds of flowers in a garden which spanned over 400 kilometres. Somehow the right musicians appeared who would provide their brilliance and colour in the form of lead guitar, (Juulian Grimmsshaw, violins, (Chris Chamberlain and Heather Fletcher, viberphone, (Merv Grewer, mandolin, (Warren Parker), piano, (Jerry Marshall, accordian, (Jonathon Goodall). Peppered over some songs are also flute, percussion, cello, bass guitar, rhythm guitar and backing voices. All of these Musicians are based in the beautiful South Island of New Zealand either on the West Coast, Dunedin or Christchurch. The songs thus became something bigger than just a few chords or melodies. They demanded to be expressed, recorded, mastered, mixed and presented in two Albums, the first being called "Late Bloomer" (2005), the second was completed at the end of 2007. There are many more songs which have not yet been recorded and many which have been recorded which have been played on Radio Toroa in Dunedin (Dunedin Community Access Radio). They are available to be listened to on Podcasts of Radio Toroa , (Stuey the Wolfmans Tuesday evening shows (17th July 2009, 2nd June 2009 and 21st July 2009). On the 21st July show Stuey interviewed me and I was asked to perform three songs live on air. One of my songs off my first Album Late Bloomer, "I Surrender" was played over a six month period over a Radio Station in Spain ( 2008) and earned royalties through A.P.R.A. (Australasian Performing Right Association Limited). I also performed at the Dunedin Fringe Festival in 2010 and was the opening act for a band who were having an album launching at The Cellars and The Provincial Hotel. There is also a recently released book by Author Trish Saunders, The Other Dunedin Sound (The Acoustic Community of Southern New Zealand), which I am honoured to be included in (Pages 80 and 81). Video recordings from all the participants were also made, details which are available by contacting Trish Saunders in Dunedin. My musical career has been late starting and also peppered with periods when other life needs have encroached upon my creative pourings! (like earning a living and paying the bills!). But music is part of me and as important and necessary to me as food and water... 2011 has been a challenging year also, with the Christchurch quake occuring five days after I moved to Christchurch from the West Coast. Somehow though through all the chaos and rubble, I have been led to various musical events and also other musicians have appeared in my life. Somehow I know I am meant to be there and who knows, perhaps this is where Album three will be born! (Rock and Roll has a new meaning here in Christchurch!....Que Sera Sera)....
