Waiting for the Phone (feat. Natalie Law) [Explicit]
The second in the series of our A-Single-A-Month-For-A-Year, our June single pushes the envelope a bit, but still, we feel, has that essential single-ness. A bad trip through the gutter of Camden (London, UK), this song grew out of John reading a Lily Allen social media post (yes, it was on MySpace!!) about "feeling shitter than Winehouse", and wondering what that meant. The follow-up to our summery single, "Maybe Someday", "Waiting for the Phone" is a bit darker, certainly more angular, but also features Ms. Natalie Law preaching from the off before she tags in John Landau to lead vocal duties. They share a couple of choruses and a smoooooth early-'70's-style bridge peppered with Michael Lovatt's horn hits before things really kick off: Jez Hollis and special guest Dimitri Varotsis spray Andrew Hayes' lunatic honky-tonk piano stylings on his solo with molten shards of glass. Mike Hollis' batters us into the final chorus and Bronwyn McMahon's brilliantly nonchalant bass line shrugs its shoulders and takes us home. Finis.
