"Song to Say Goodbye" is the second single from Placebo's fifth studio album, Meds. It was produced by Dimitri Tikovoi. Because "Because I Want You" was only released in the United Kingdom, elsewhere, "Song to Say Goodbye" is considered the first single from Meds. The song develops around piano notes that repeat throughout it. It is a song that refers to drug addiction, specifically heroin. It contains a phrase of Neil Young's: "The needle and the damage done". There is a live version available of the song on the live EP Live at La Cigale. The cover art features a blurred picture of vocalist, Brian Molko.
