Sunflower Stories
Guitarist/programmer/producer Robin Guthrie made history in the ’80s and ’90s as the co-founder of Scottish alt-rock outfit The Cocteau Twins. The Cocteau’s music has been called dreamlike, beautiful, and heavenly, but truly defining the atmospheric quality of their sound transcends words. The same sort of majestic sonic splendor glistens from Guthrie’s latest solo venture, Sunflower Stories. The third in a trilogy of EPs, the four instrumentals are founded on Guthrie’s trademark soundscape founded on effects-drenched guitar that ooze a stream of lilting melodies and shimmering textures. The majesty heard on “Horse Heaven,” “Petals,” “Slightly Out of Focus,” and the title track are beyond emotional juggernauts; as the songs unfold, you’re transported back to the Cocteau’s salad days, waiting for vocalist Elizabeth Fraser’s otherworldly vocals to saunter into the mix. Though the group broke up in 1997, and it’s been years since he’s worked with his former lover once dubbed as the “voice of God,” Gurthrie’s solo work is nothing short of a religious experience.
