The Sharp Nine Sessions
The Sharp Nine Sessions are the culmination of three days of recording over the past two years at Brian Cunningham's beautiful new studio in Bellingham, WA. The Jazz Project's affiliation with the featured performers, guitarists John Stowell and Brian Cunningham, spans more than 20 years. Both Stowell and Cunningham have been performing for The Jazz Project since its first concert season in 1999, and have been instrumental in the development and propagation of Jazz Project programming. This recording marks the 11th on The Jazz Project record label--two have featured Stowell--Rob Davis & John Stowell: Snow Angels (2006); and Live at Lucia Douglas Gallery (2003). Another Brian Cunningham Quartet album released on the Jazz Project Label last year, Blue Serenade (2012), features all original tunes by Cunningham with Jud Sherwood on drums, Tom Anastasio on bass, and Josh Cook on tenor saxophone. After three sessions on this project, here's the end result--nine tunes, mostly Cunningham's originals, plus one from Stowell and a few of arrangements of some lesser performed tunes by John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, and Herbie Hancock.
