Volume 4 ‘See The Valley’ opens with a beautiful instrumental version of “Amazing Grace” played on Sax – spine chilling! Loeffler throughout the series is happy not to take center stage and there a number of times when there are gospel, blues or funk songs performed by members of the Blue Angels. Here we get a loose but passionate version of “His Eye Is On The Sparrow” which again shows the way the band flows together with seemingly little rehearsal! Elsewhere the standout song is “See The Valley” which in this version has quite a Latin vibe. The improvisatory nature of the band is expressed in “Passaic County Jam” where the Blue Angels hit that groove and don’t move! Everyone gets a chance to solo and it’s Henry Mitchell’s amazing piano playing that gets me. If you want to learn how to share the gospel with a room full of prisoners, some of whom are violent and not interested, you can learn from Loeffler’s bold and firm hand as he conducts an altar call and you can almost hear the party up in heaven as prisoners respond.
