This album is a pleasure to listen to. Jackson Browne is a talent of the first rank, in a league with few peers. A song that's average for JB stands above most other singer-songwriters in writing, musicality and performance, and that's true here. Two weeks ago I had the pleasure of catching Jackson in concert -- from the third row, no less. He was playing solo, with acoustic guitars and piano, and his brilliant performance left no doubt that his fame is richly deserved. All alone, he captivated the audience, and did a couple of numbers from this album, including "I'm the Cat," a nifty rocker that Browne clearly enjoys singing. The songs on this disc have smooth melodies, that incredibly lush, powerful and expressive voice of Browne's, and a variety of musical styles. There's Latin, reggae, the soulful "Baby How Long," the toe-tapping "Culver Moon," and the tuneful mastery that's common to Browne's work, including the beautiful "Barricades of Heaven." Having said all that, there are two tracks here that IMHO are turkeys, namely "Looking East" and "Information Wars," two political rants that to me are clumsy and ill conceived. But so what: skip over those two and you've still got over 40 solid minutes of wonderful music from one of the world's top musicians. If you like Jackson Browne, you'll get plenty of good spins from this disc.
