The Rag & Bones
The Rag and Bones are a five piece band from Limerick, Ireland. Their sound can be described as "alternative folk" but it is very difficult to put it into one genre. They utilize elements from various music styles and are always open to experimentation. On May 1st 2014 they released their self-titled debut EP which has received a lot of positive feedback. Recording began in the summer of 2013, using both the studio and their respective living rooms! The record contains four songs, all of which have a certain freshness and honesty to them. The EP opens with "91", a song that contains a lot of energy and a powerful outro that builds up to a climatic high. It is the appropriate choice for introducing the record and would also be a great live show opener. "Folk Song", the 2nd track, is a beautifully crafted acoustic song, and would be best suited for listening to on those lazy sunny days. The 3rd track, "One By One", is heavily influenced by American roots music. It combines rustic guitars with melodic fiddle playing, while the bass and percussion maintain the underlying groove throughout. The last track, "Centipede", is certainly the darkest of the four. Just under nine minutes in length you would be forgiven for presuming that it might be excessive, but it is definitely worth listening to in full. The use of space paints a certain atmospheric landscape, and allows each of the different elements to breathe. The vocal is distant and melancholic, while the instrumental outro captures the band members gelling together as a single unit. It is the perfect track for ending the record. This EP is a must have for the music fan.
