There is an on-going narrative that follows Bodo (a sheepdog, our namesake) through a series of adventures many of which are set in the eighteen-eighties when Wichita was a cowtown. (Bodo can travel through time.) In this case Bodo ventures across the Arkansas River to Delano, which was the rough part of town where cowboys let off steam after the trail-drive: bordellos, gambling houses, bars etc. Delano is a little more civilized now and Bodo Ensemble plays a lot of gigs there. The cd includes a poem depicting Bodo’s experience with references to the titles of compositions played by the band (Giant Outlaw Tomato, Land of the Lotus, Elephant etc.), Valentino Pena and the Twisters, a good friend and a band I used to listen to when I was growing up. The music? It’s wild enough and swings in a rambunctious sort of way. Reggae in mixed meters, freaked-out rhythm-and-blues, a ballad in Bodo style reharmonizing a jazz standard, some modal blowing. So far this is our only documentation of the band with Ryan Anselmi, Richard Sherrington and Brian Mueller. CO
