There is a lot to like about the creation of Teitur’s sixth studio album, Story Music. Unfortunately, a lot of the warmth and sympathetic ideas drown in disconnected experiments. Through the course of ten years, Faroese singer-songwriter has proven himself a solid writer and singer whose ability to constantly create a shift in his music makes any new album a curiosity. Story Music is an elegant and warm addition to his catalogue created in a new studio on the Faroe Islands with the help of 60 local musicians aged 9-86. Unfortunately, all these different impressions – stories – don’t really have solid a through line so the album as a whole turns into a scatter of good and mediocre. Story Music opens beautifully with the piano driven ballad Hopeful, the album’s best track that finds quality in the simplistic and fragile. The quirky folk song Indie Girl and the very musical-like It’s Not Funny Anymore are among the other highlights on Story Music. Other songs seem to either try to hard or not really make sense. If You Wait has an odd start/stop intro that ties in well with the lyrics (“If you wait a little longer than you normally would/the most amazing thing may appear”). After the two minutes it takes to get through those few words, however, what appears is not amazing but mediocre and feels like a cog that needs to be oiled. First single Rock and Roll Band has a sweet folky pop tune with which the lyrics (“This is the story of a rock and roll band”) are just confusing; the song is a lot of things but not rock and roll. Story Music bumps around with a lot of cinematic expressions but the songs sound like they were written for a bit too many different genres before closing with the eerie Walking Up A Hill, an interesting stand alone piece but a song whose haunting tone doesn’t fit in anywhere with the rest of the album. Story Music does live up to its name: the 10 tracks tell 10 different stories of hope, hard work, rock music history etc. Some do so with more success than others and each with no clear contribution to the overall story – the entirety of the album.
