Praying For Love
“Praying For Love” was the third single from Donna De Lory‘s homonymous 1992 debut album. Released in 1993, it was written by Donna De Lory and Paul Gordon. Production was in charge of Stephen Hague, whose long career included collaborations with Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Pet Shop Boys, New Order, and Erasure. The single did not make it to the Billboard charts. Artist Background Best known as a background singer and dancer for Madonna, De Lory has continued to make her presence felt as a soloist and a member of Bliss, the duo that she shares with cellist Cameron Stone. She also tends toward the mystical and began incorporating Sanskrit mantras or Kirtans into her songs, as can be heard on The Lover & the Beloved (I highly recommend this album, hindu sounds over smooth electronic beats, and her delicate voice all blend in smoothly). Her second solo single, “Just a Dream,” written by Madonna who sang harmony vocals, became a Top Ten dance hit on the US Billboard Dance/Club Play chart. As a background singer, De Lory has worked with artists like Carly Simon, Ray Parker, Jr., Kim Carnes, Santana, Laura Branigan, Belinda Carlisle, Mylene Farmer and Madonna. Her greatest break came when Madonna’s manager, Pat Leonard, heard her demo tape of her song “Open Your Heart” and hired her to sing and dance on Madonna’s Who’s That Girl tour in 1987. She subsequently appeared on every Madonna show except the “Sticky & Sweet Tour”.
