I was born in the small coal mining community of Nordegg, Alberta, Canada. My father was a coal miner. I grew up listening to country music which has had a very strong influence on my identity and my life’s journey. I began singing when I could talk and from the age of three won many talent contests. I was always singing. It did not matter what I was doing or where I went, I was always singing. I would often go down to the school and sit outside and sing which became a major distraction for the students especially at exam time. I recall being chased away from the school by the principle on many occasions because the students would come to the open windows to hear me sing. I would sing songs made popular hits by Eddy Arnold, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Jimmy Wakely, and many of the other recording artists of that era. The first song I can recall singing was the song Jole Blonde. At the age of six or seven I would go to the hockey games to cheer on the home team and between periods I would go into the lobby and people would gather around me and I would sing Accapella. At the end of each song everyone would throw coins to me and I often came home with five dollars or more in change. That was a lot of money in the 1940’s for a young lad. Back then you could buy a candy bar for ten cents. This is my first CD to be released. It is a compilation of songs by Eddy Arnold, Jimmy Wakely, Jim Reeves, Marty Robbins, Gene Autry, and George Morgan. The songs Anytime, Bouquet of Roses, and Just a Little lovin’ (will go a long way), were Number One hits for Eddy Arnold in 1948 and the song Don’t Rob another Mans Castle was a number One hit for Eddy Arnold in 1949. Also included on this CD is one of my favourite songs originally sung by Jim Reeves, Four Walls, which became a major number One hit in 1957 and also went to number Eleven on the Pop Charts. Gene Autry sang Have I Told You Lately that I Love You in 1943 a song that was Number Three on the Country Music Charts that year; Jimmy Wakely and Margaret Whiting recorded One Has My Name The Other has My Heart, a song that was a Number One hit in 1948; and George Morgan recorded Candy Kisses a number one hit in 1949. A White Sport Coat and A Pink Carnation was a hit for Marty Robbins in 1957 and rose to the number One position on the Country Charts just when Rock and Roll music was beginning. Finally I would like to thank all my fans for supporting me and buying a copy of this CD. I also want to thank my good friend Rod Millar, who believes in me and has offered his encouragement and support throughout the duration of this project.
