Circle the Wagons 1994 In the same year as Schizoid Zitherness was buzzing into being, 1994, i was continuing attempts to compose with synthesized and sampled renditions of traditional instruments & meld together various "outside" elements into some of the pieces, including said buzzing. I kept a small cassette recorder in my old truck and was constantly making recordings of nature, large and small, storms, crowds, children playing, night creatures, morning birds, radio announcers, graveyard ambiance, dogs lapping water, everything, Though Stokowski said, "A painter paints his pictures on canvas. But musicians paint their pictures on silence." Once you start using these types of materials, you find out that real silence is very rare. And unless you catalog your colors, (sounds), consistently, you will spend a lot of time searching for that moment the screech owls went crazy at 3 am. Much deeper into the "digital revolution" now, all this is a wee bit easier. The machinery used for recording "Circle the Wagons" remained the same as for the other albums done in '94. The Peavey MCR4 cassette 4-track and AMR64 six channel mixer with two Shure microphones. The Roland D-50 synth and RD-500 acoustic piano. Field recordings interwoven amongst traditional and non traditional instruments helped create the palette for compositions, whether they made a brief appearance or were part of a continuous canvas. Examples of the former would be the LP backwards chorus dropping in and out of "Angle Kiss" or latter examples would be the Field Recording of a football game on the piece "Circle the Wagons" or the ice storm recording on "Juice on the Rocks", which went even further in its "organic quality" by featuring a wire marimba made from part of a downed hollow walnut tree and junked electrical wire used as the playing bars----all casualties of the storm. The power was out for 30 days. The storm recording was made on the boom box using batteries. Most all other compositions here were made with the keyboards mentioned.
