Bird Head Burlando 1994 Bird Head is 100% Boing Box Table, and the beginning of the Schizoid Zither saga. A funky farm table on the outside, raise the top, and one has a tunable zither on the inside. Close the top and chop a fish. Set up areas for melody and experimental percussion, (if desired). The improvisations on Bird Head go that way. There are also various field recordings of nature and other things located within the compositions in places: Blue Jays, cicadas, a table pushed across a wooden floor, truck muffler, auto air. Extraneous percussion: shaker, squeeze drum, Boing Box percussion. Added traditional instruments: electric guitar. Notes on playing: Various scales are used in the 10 improvisations, Spanish, Melodic Minor, Arabic and others. The double string course can be tuned unison or intervalic. The percussive section is really anywhere the melodic section isn't. Tones in the percussion area can range from pure tones to metallic trashiness and are achieved by weaving various types of metal between the strings. Beaters are made from hardwoods. Besides being spanked, the Boing Box can be plucked like a harp, bend strings like a Koto or slide notes like pedal steel. And the technique of placing felt or foam between the strings produces a lovely deep tone that can be played however one wishes. Yes, it's a real instrument. Simple.
