Paper Dragon have produced this album as a collection of melodic songs, with a progressive rock slant, sometimes going very progressive, sometimes more poppy. Musically very unlike any other artist I have heard, with many different styles used on these 14 tracks, but staying within a certain sound. Vocals are the main part of the songs, with complex and unusual harmonies used all through the album. Lyrically autobiographical, but with songs about temptation, betrayal, fears of failure, these are not your average love songs, although there are a few references to relationships past and present. The lyrics themselves dig deep into personal experiences, but these experiences are all accessible, and do not become self indulgent. The words, just like the music, are quite unusual, but always believable, and easy to relate to, even though some are clearly from troubled times. On my first listen to the album, the songs appeared to be quite complex, with a lot going on musically, and vocally, but on the second listen the songs really started to work for me, rather like a classical music piece, or some progressive rock albums. The album definitely grows on you with each listen, and I found some of the more complex songs became my favourites, even though on my first listen these songs were too complicated. The artist behind Paper Dragon, Ian Grove, is a multi-instrumentalist, playing guitar, bass, drums and keyboards, as well as the main and harmony vocals. He is from Southampton, UK, and has previously worked with other progressive rock bands, but has never featured before as a lead vocal, surprising as this would seem to be one of the best things about this album. The vocal carries a great deal of emotion, and swings between a soft smooth sound, to a hard edge rockier sound on some tracks, and the harmonies provide a lush backing, sometimes going in a way you would not expect.
