Stand Up! Fight Back! (Radio Remix)
"Stand Up! Fight Back!" was inspired by Wendy's participation in Disrupt J20's protest march during the presidential inauguration on January 20, 2017. She heard an inspiring chant and wrote a song around it. It stands in a rather too abrupt contrast with the second of the two songs, the full band version of "The Things They Left Behind" included here. This is a gentle song in honor of Wendy's mother and father and other relatives whose physical belongings have passed into her keeping. The song asks, between the lines, why are we left with only these items when the people have passed beyond their things? Most of the things mentioned were possessions of Wendy's parents, her mother's parents, and her godmother. But two are different. One is a quilt made by Hanna Fessenden in 1832 upon the occasion of her sister's marriage. The bride died. The widower remarried another sister (not Hannah) and quilt came back to Hannah, and eventually found its way to Wendy. The last item is a tiny sterling silver urn, with removable top, that is inscribed GGD. These initials might stand for Grace Goodridge Davis, a great aunt of Wendy's who never married and died in her forties, before Wendy was born. The tiny urn must have passed to Grace's sister Miriam, Wendy's maternal grandmother, then to her mother, and finally to her. The people pass away; the memories we have of them dim; and yet the things they left behind are still here in this world. Without them.
