Big Seven
Many passers-by that see Próxima Parada's Big Seven sitting on the listening rack of their record store may assume that they are a mariachi band trying to do a crossover into American music. When that soul does take a chance on Big Seven, slips the headphones on, how will she describe it? Is she listening to soul music? Would she say it’s jazzy? Groovy? Folky? Funky? Everyone seems to choose their own words to describe Big Seven's niche blend of neo-soul + something extra. One thing is for sure: that person who takes a good listen is likely to be transfixed, closing out her surroundings, forgetting about her long list of to-dos for a few moments and just feeling what these boys convey through these songs. Every person takes away something different from listening to Big Seven. The twenty-two year old jewelry maker that heard Tossin’ My Troubles decided to go do just that, lay low in her most-loved place and soak it up, free of worry and anxiety. The father of two boys involuntarily converted that opening trumpet melody in Why Not It Be Me to a little hum as he was waiting in line at Trader Joe’s. Later on, alone in her room laying on the floor, Time In A Circle invited the jewelry maker to glance within herself and acknowledge the potential that’s waiting behind her door. At the office, his feet started during One Cloud Is Lonely, and then he did that gentle eyes-closed head sway for Better Now. Big Seven is a cohesive assemblage of influences, perspectives, and life experiences. Each player contributes something essential to the groove and nothing more, and it comes through in the final mixing and production. This groove combines with soulful vocals and lyrics that bring listeners joy and comfort in that ongoing practice of opening their own doors. As a whole, Big Seven is honest, refreshing, and feels good.
