A "classic" is an object of enduing excellence that has outlived the generation of its origin: a classic auto, classic book, classic building. A classic hymn is one that is still being sung without regard for its occasionally antique vocabulary, Such hymns live because they "work," meaning they have qualities which continue to move us emotionally and intellectually. The memories of such hymns can call up long-dormant images of family and churches good times. The 80 voice Alumni Festival Chorus specifically chose Dr. Charles Nelson, a well-known concert bass-baritone, to record this series of popular hymns. His experience as soloist with major orchestras as well as his extensive work in both church music and choir conducting, uniquely prepare him to present these hymns in new arrangements by Dr. Jack Boyd for choir and soloist.
