Joonas Widenius (born 1980, Tornio) is a Finnish flamenco guitarist. He is considered to be one of the most promising flamenco guitarists in Finland. His distinctive style has earned a warm welcome from both the critics and the audiences. His passion for music and the guitar has driven the musician all around Finland and all the way to Spain. The inspiration and the education Widenius amassed on these journeys have had a profound impact on his musical expression. Various organisations have supported Widenius’ work as composer and musician, most recently the Georg Malmstén Foundation who awarded him a grant for the year 2011. Widenius, who performs actively with his various line-ups, travels around Finland to play, compose and to accompany dancers, singers and performances. He has performed at the flamenco festivals in Helsinki, Tampere and Oulu, Rauma Summer Jazz, Raahen Rantajazz and the music video festival in Oulu, at the Stallet club in Stockholm, the folk dance festival Jutajaiset at Rovaniemi, and at various other dance festivals, clubs and concert halls around Finland. “My music draws inspiration from everywhere. It breathes and lives its own life through my experiences. I regard nature, emotions and live performances as my greatest sources of inspiration. They are the leading spirit of my compositions.”
