John's fourth album form 2005 is stunningly eclectic mix of styles from the folk rock of 'Dead Wood Down', the country feel of 'Old Habits Die Hard to the North African influenced instrumental 'Melting Pot' and the hard social comment folk style of 'If You Want To Know About War (Ask A Soldier'). It continues the previous album's (Waking Dreams) more mainstream sound, many of the tracks featuring a band sound. The excellent Mario Price features extensively on violin and Ian Sainsbury (co writer of two of the songs) on piano. John himself covers the the bass guitar and much of the drumming and of course the deft guitar work, while Lynne Ward and Joanne Knight supply some gorgeous harmonies. Dave Hawkins also features on Drums and Percussion, Richard Hubbard on Cittern and Paul Fitzgerald on double bass. All of these songs have featured at some time or another in John's live repertoire. Some have become stand out, much requested regulars - John's much praised and witty swipe at X factor and boy bands'Songs Of Teenage Angst And Love (Written By Middle Aged Men)', the country flavoured ballad of breaking up 'Leaving Without Leaving' and the anti nationalist 'Common Ground' to name but three. 'If You want To Know About War...' is drawn entirely from the recollections of John's own family, many of whom had to go to war while Big Ship draws on his childhood years in Southampton, England watching the huge liners come in and out of port. The album received great reviews on release, as have all John's albums, now all the track are available individually or as an album.
