Athanor is a psych-rock-power-pop duo from Chicago that was formed in 1973 by Greg Herriges and Rick Vittenson. In Herriges’ state-of-the-art home studio, they recorded dozens of original songs, and they recorded six songs in professional studios that were released on three 45 rpm singles, garnishing some radio attention. The two continued to play together and record occasional songs over the years. In 2011 one of Herriges’ compositions, “Urizen,” was pirated by an English label for a psychedelic compilation. The result: a devoted European fan base. Soon after, they signed with Guerssen Records of Spain to release two albums consisting mostly of their ‘70s recordings on LP vinyl and CD, Flashback and Inside Out. Both albums garnered airplay throughout the world and met with rave reviews: "Guerssen have emerged from the rock and roll mine clutching another chunk of gold with this essential collection..." -- Active Listener “Unsung hometown geniuses…incredible musicians...might be our favorite rare rock discovery yet from the great Guerssen label!" -- Dusty Groove “It’s rare an unheard album takes immediate hold on you...Thus far, my fave-rave of this 365.” -- UGLY THINGS (review of Flashback) “4 Stars -- Athanor were among the better acts that mined 60s folk-rock and psych-inspired pop in the 70s,” -- Record Collector "...some of the songs could pass for relics from some abandoned and previously presumed lost Apple project now excavated after a lifetime gathering dust in the vaults." -- SHINDIG! "...Herriges' vocals are evocative of John Lennon's early solo albums, while the songwriting has echoes of late period Beatles, Badfinger, and Emitt Rhodes." -- UGLY THINGS (review of Inside Out)
