A Family Gathering - Old-Timey Music
Dance fiddler Asa Cargill Married ballad singer Hattie Tyler in Kentucky to unite two musical families. Here is a family jam session when Acie was 11 or 12 years old playing the drop thumb style if banjo with his uncles and cousins. The musicians were not professionals. They were miners, workers and subsistence farmers. They loved their traditions and on this recording they are playing dance tunes and folk songs. They use primitive tunings and techniques that had been passed down through the generations. The Cargill's played for dances with their string band and some of the musicians here are Tylers who were known as strict preservationists of old styles of music. The original recording was made at a family gathering in Kentucky with members of the TYler's and Cargill's present. It was made on an old reel to reel recorder and digitally reprocessed to bring the sound up to modern standards.
