Soup
King Crimson alumni Tony Levin and Pat Mastelotto join with Chapman Stick master Michael Bernier to release ‘Soup,’ a completely unique album featuring multiple Sticks. They will follow it with a world tour, including dates in North America, Japan, and Europe. Tony Levin introduced the world to the unique finger-tapped sound of the Chapman Stick in the opening riff of “Elephant Talk” on the seminal 1981 King Crimson album ‘Discipline’. Since then, he has become the premier player of the all-fingerboard instrument that incorporates both bass and guitar strings and combines the playing techniques of four instruments- guitar, bass, piano, and drums. On ‘Soup,’ Levin joins with Mastelotto (drums) and Bernier to showcase 56 minutes of hard-edged progressive rock for this rarely-heard instrument which they have been honing on the road for the past year. Songs include the title track, a whimsical ode to the Large Hadron Collidor, an ominous rock rendition of Stravinsky’s “Firebird Ballet,” the classically-structured “Fugue,” and “Relentless,” where high-energy speed playing meets classical bowed sections. Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree mixed the title track, with additional mixes by Tony Lash, Larry DeVivo, and by Stick Men.
