Lazy Days of May (Reprise)
"While hiking the resplendent Split in my home province of Nova Scotia, I pondered the power of surging tide and wind, glimmering beauty of sea, chance encounters and destiny. It seemed all too surreal to pass upon as mere memory. ...with references to the Bay of Fundy and artist, Alex Colville, I wrote the song "Lazy Days of May", as trace evidence of my journey and faith in the universe." Originally, I composed the opening horn for trombone, to set up the coastline of my origin and myth. Indeed, a lot of the lyric is latent portent, and its dark currents of love, loss and the afterlife resonate profoundly. From my teaching studio post, I heard the history of jazz & blues across the hall, in Jerry Cook's saxophone (Guitar Shorty, Pinetop Perkins, Frankie Lee, Big Joe Duskin.,Crash, Powder Blues). It only took me three years to clear my head of divorce and ask if he would grace the tune! His always welcome warm tone, at once harkens back to an era of "players" full of personality. I could not be more pleased with the result of our collaboration, after one rehearsal! Not to mention, a superlative, tight rhythm section, in bassist Craig Strain of (Pick Pocket) and Emyln Scherk (The Real Ponchos) I hope you enjoy the journey in sound and song, too. Thank you, everyone who made this recording possible, namely: Jerry Cook - tenor saxophone, Craig Strain - bass, Emlyn Scherk - drums, ; Andre Doucette - recording/mix engineer, Andy Warren, overdub/remix engineer, Crew Studios, North Vancouver, Greg Mindorff - mastering engineer, Suite Sound Labs, Vancouver, Canada Produced by Stephen King - acoustic guitar, vocal, bells, lyric and arrangement. PS - A fateful, snow-fallen Christmas eve long ago, someone cast a spell on me with the "gifted bells" that haunt this song.
