Lone Rhino/Twang Bar King
by Sean WestergaardLone Rhino and Twang Bar King are easily two of Adrian Belew's best solo albums. That they had to wait 20 years for proper full-length release on compact disc is nearly inexcusable, and they were only released in pricey (but beautiful) mini-LP replica jackets as limited-edition items in Japan. Island Records must have realized that there was indeed a market for these albums, but apparently didn't want to do it themselves, so they licensed the recordings to Gott Discs, who combined both albums onto a single disc. Of course, this is a great opportunity to pick up these two excellent albums in one package for those who missed out on the Japanese versions, and the recordings do sound fantastic. Also to Gott's credit, they included all the lyrics and liner notes contained in the original albums. It's the rest of the package that leaves something to be desired. The only place you can see the full original artwork for the albums is on the front cover, where both images are shown shrunk down to less than one-fourth of the CD (and only the front covers at that), and the same cropped images from Lone Rhino appear on the first and second as well as the third and fourth pages. The informative but somewhat perfunctory biography that occupies the rest of the space on those pages could have easily been sacrificed to show the original front and back images in a more reasonable size. It's that casually thrown together attitude with the graphics that leaves a bad taste, but the music sounds great and since this is probably the only way to get your hands on this material at this point, it's good to have around. However, shame on Island for not treating these albums with more respect.
