by Scott Yanow The Jazz Crusaders dropped the "jazz" from their name after over a decade of popular recordings for the Pacific Jazz label, and they switched record companies for the first time. Although a little funkier than previously, there was no major change (at least immediately) in the group's sound. This somewhat obscure LP is comprised of tunes by trombonist Wayne Henderson (including the five-part, 15½-minute "Pass the Plate"), keyboardist Joe Sample and drummer Stix Hooper. Original member Wilton Felder (on tenor and electric bass) completes the basic quartet which is joined by guitarist Arthur Adams. Good music although nothing all that memorable occurs.
