Alongside longtime producers Andy LeMaster and David Barbe, Pacific UV tweak their hypnotic, blissful space rock/dream pop style in progress for an impressive self-titled debut. It's a soothing venture of layered string arrangements and flowing guitar work, and the Athens, GA, five piece have arranged a breathless soundscape similar to what Sigur Rós and Spiritualized previously created. Founding members Howard Hudson and Clay Jordan succeed in crafting a full, sonic symphony lush in soul and heart. Azure Ray's Maria Taylor contributes vocals to the hazy mind trips of "Out in the Blue" and "Blind." Heather McIntosh of Japancakes also lends a hand, adding cello to the loopy swirl of "God Is So Tired" and "LAPD vs. NYPD"'s cinematic mix of pianos and samples. Pacific UV's gauzy melodies are slightly derivative of mid-'90s space rock yet charming, and this eight-song selection finds a band that works painstakingly hard to get things just right. Whereas Longplay One was grounded in blue spirit and color, Pacific UV daydreams about something a little more rosy.
