The third volume of keyboard music in Sony's György Ligeti Edition offers the works for piano duo, piano duet, organ, harpsichord and three short works for solo piano. The works for piano and piano duet are early works in Ligeti's overtly Hungarian style. The famous works for harpsichord are among the most amusing of Ligeti's maturity. This is one of the few recordings of 'Continuum' to accurately reflect the complete score. The three pieces for two pianos are much tougher works. The second piece, 'Self portrait with Reich and Riley (with Chopin in the background)' adopts the devices of the two American minimalists and relates them to the finale of Chopin's second piano sonata all the while remaining uniquely Ligeti. Aside from the early Ricercare, later incorporated in the piano work of the same name and heard in different versions on Vols. 3, 5 and 7, the organ music reflects Ligeti's liberation from Hungary and its repressive artistic demands. 'Volumina' melted the electronic apparatus of the organ at its first performance, while the first Study requires a malfunctioning instrument to realize the intended array of colors. All the performances are breathtaking. Another brilliant installment in this remarkable series.
